Crayfish are considered a tasty and desirable product. In the summer, there is the opportunity to catch them yourself. But not everyone knows how to do this. There are many ways to catch cancer, all of which will be discussed in the article.
Crayfish habits
Crayfish prefer to live in clean water. If a pond in which they are found was found, this indicates the environmental friendliness of this place. Crayfish is a welcome prey, no less popular than fish. Everyone enjoys the taste qualities of crayfish; it is with this product that they like to have a bite of beer. In addition, crayfish are used as bait for fishing.
The length of a large specimen without claws can reach up to 20 centimeters, and the weight of an adult varies between 150-200 grams. Catching such cancer is a big luck. In most cases, the cancers manage to catch medium-sized individuals - 10-12 cm in length.
Crayfish habitats
Crayfish are considered single. They prefer to live on a rocky bottom, where they can easily find a secluded place, or non-clay surfaces - here crayfish can dig their own mink without too much difficulty. Crab holes are located near the coast, this is a narrow dwelling with a long corridor, no more than 1 meter long.
In the daytime, the cancer sits in a mink, closing the entrance to it with its claws. To search for food, he goes out in the dark or in the afternoon in cloudy weather. Features of its existence are taken into account when the hunt.
More successful places for catching crayfish are:
- Shell rock. This is a place where crayfish often settle.
- Thickets of reeds. People do not bathe there, there are no animals, therefore, crayfish can calmly equip their homes.
- Sandy bottom. Ideal fishing environment. There is a clean bottom and fine sand, due to which it is good to distinguish prey.
- Quiet creek with snags and tree roots. It’s very convenient for hiding the cancer here, but it’s worth it to catch the rakolov, who can easily navigate the terrain.
- Rocky bottom. Here crayfish equip their minks, and therefore it will be possible to find a lot of prey.
Time
Know at what time to catch crayfish, should every crayfish, who decided to go hunting. This is necessary in order not to waste your personal time in vain. Crayfish catch occurs in the dark, when they recover for prey - from 22-00 to 3-00. There are ponds where crayfish go out in search of food in the early morning.
It is difficult to answer unequivocally at what time to catch crayfish, because in different regions their own terms are set. It is believed that you can catch delicious crayfish in the autumn. From the end of August to the end of October, crayfish have delicious and fatty meat.
When is it forbidden to catch crayfish?
Bans for the extraction of crayfish in various regions of Russia are determined by the relevant state body. The following are some examples of restrictions on catching freshwater inhabitants:
- From April to June, crayfish are not caught in the Astrakhan region. But individuals are considered an exception more than 10 centimeters - they are allowed to produce them during this period.
- Arthropods are completely forbidden to catch in Krasnodar and all surrounding rivers.
- From October to June, a ban on catching crayfish is valid in the Vladimir Region.
- From October to June in the Kirov region hunting for crayfish is prohibited.
- Due to the fact that from the middle of June to the end of July, reproduction and molting of crayfish takes place in the Vologda Oblast, they cannot be caught during this period.
- In the Moscow region and in the region, year-round crayfish fishing will not work.
- In the Orenburg region from June 5 to July 15 there is a ban on arthropod fishing.
- In the Kursk region, hunting is prohibited from the beginning of October until the end of June.
- In the Pskov region, arthropods cannot be caught from the moment of ice melting until mid-July.
Fishing methods
Due to the fact that today it is popular to catch crayfish with raffles, few people use other fishing methods or completely forget about them. But there are many options that are used to capture arthropods. Not all methods are easy enough, but this is what makes the cancer hunt so interesting and exciting.
Manual method
The hunt begins as soon as it gets dark, because in the daytime the crayfish hide in their burrows, where they rest. At night, arthropods are selected on the shallows, sometimes ashore. The easiest way to catch crayfish with your hands is the most traditional method, and no less effective than other methods. To prevent cancer from pinching with claws, gloves are pre-worn.
Crayfish are required in shallow ponds, under snags or stones. It is required to take into account that arthropods swim quickly. Be sure to take a flashlight with them so that its light attracts the attention of crayfish. In the process of fishing, the speed of the rakolov reaction is especially important, because the crayfish instantly orient themselves in space if they feel danger.
Next, you need to grope a hole at the bottom, gently stick your hand in it, and, feeling for the cancer, grab it with two fingers on the carapace, carefully pull it out.
Crawling
Crayfish catching by hands is less effective and not safe. For these reasons, it is recommended to use rakolovka, which is quite easy to use. Usually, several types of cancers are used simultaneously to increase the chance of catching cancers. The design was made in such a way that arthropods got there and could not get out. And in order for them to climb there, they use a bait that attracts crayfish.
Due to the fact that crayfish prefer to rummage in steep steep banks for building minks, the structure is installed off the coast. It is done like this:
- Take a long, strong stick, from one end of the edge of which there is a slingshot.
- The cord from the rakolovki is caught with a slingshot to lift the structure.
- The head is slowly lowered into the water until it touches the bottom.
- The cord is tied to reeds, a stick stuck in the shore or any strong tree.
At night, crayfish approach the shore, due to which it is not worth throwing the crayfish too far.
How to catch a fishing rod?
This option is not simple, because crayfish are not fish, they just do not peck on bait. Moreover, it will be difficult to fix the bait in the dark. For these reasons, there is only one way out - to catch crayfish for fishing in the daytime, but closer to sunset. As a bait, it is recommended to choose a creep, dung worm, rotten meat or fish. The best time to catch crayfish for fishing is from September to October.
It’s easier to catch cancer during the zhor period on a classic fishing rod. For a larger catch, it is advisable to immediately attach several hooks to the fishing rod, which will increase the likelihood that several crayfish will bite. Arthropods peck very slowly, but the bite of the cancers immediately feels: the cancer grabs the bait and drags it, while the float first goes smoothly to the side, and then it is sunk and hidden in the water. Due to the fact that the cancer does not cling to the bait very tightly, pull out the fishing rod carefully.
Screen performance
It is popular to catch crayfish with a screen, which is a round or square structure with sides that prevent the crayfish from falling out when removed from the water. For a good catch, 2-5 screens will be enough. By design, the screen is similar to conventional raking, but differs in a rectangular shape.
A steel wire is taken, from which two squares are made, in the future they are fixed at a distance of 20-30 centimeters from each other, then they mesh the bottom and side walls of the screen. Through the open top, the crayfish will crawl behind the bait. The screen is tied to a thick pole, which will act as a fishing rod, a bait is placed in the center, the screen itself is carefully installed in water.
Harpoon use
Hands catch crayfish, using harpoons, to create which use a rigid and springy wire with a diameter of 2-4 mm. Pieces of wire up to 45 centimeters long are flattened so that peculiar hooks appear on one end. The more they will be, the more convenient it will be able to capture cancer. Even if the hooks do not cry into the carapace and pierce it, arthropods will not tear off the prison. It is recommended to use this method when fishing from a boat.
How to feed cancer?
The bait for catching crayfish is selected based on the time of year. In the spring and summer, the use of plant-based baits is effective. In autumn and winter, crayfish are lured by animal food. For these purposes, use:
- trimming meat, poultry or fish entrails;
- fish
- Worms
- mollusks;
- frogs;
- meat;
- snails.
Fish is used fresh or spoiled. In order for the bait to deplete a more pronounced aroma, the product is initially dried in the sun. Crayfish like bream, roach and crucian carp. Of meat lures, it is desirable to give preference to a carcass of a bird or a piece of beef. Permissible use of stale meat. It is better to catch frogs, snails, mollusks in the same reservoir where the crayfish are planned to be caught. Worms are an extreme option, they are placed in gauze so that they do not creep out.
From plant foods, the use of is considered effective:
- maize;
- dill;
- peas;
- black bread;
- flies
- garlic.
Peas and corn are pre-boiled, steamed or used in canned form. When choosing a bait, the season is taken into account. With the onset of cold weather, arthropods are lured by foul meat or peas. In the spring use fish or vegetable bait. In the summer in intense heat, the best option is a piece of liver, meat or chicken offal. To enhance the smell, they add a little fish oil to them.
It is equally important to choose the right place for catching crayfish, based on which, it will be possible to accurately select the bait. For example, for catching crayfish in water bodies, where the muddy bottom, spoiled fish is used as a bait. For arthropods living in similar conditions, this is considered habitual food. They crawl into the trap without feeling the danger. If there is a lot of vegetation at the bottom, rakolovy choose peas or corn for fishing.
If the hunt takes place in underwater caves or under the coast, it is advisable to use strong-flavoring complementary foods, such as spoiled meat or a mixture with garlic. In shallow water, corn, worms or mollusks are effective.
The best bait for catching crayfish is considered to be a bait prepared on its own. Several effective recipes are used that are used by experienced cancers:
- Garlic bait. Grate the garlic or crush it. Cut rye bread into pieces and fry a little in oil (optional). Garlic inside the bread and grate the crust with it. Garlic bulbs will be no worse. For their preparation, both garlic and rye bread are passed through a meat grinder, small balls are formed from the resulting mass. Then they are placed in nylon or gauze pockets - this will prevent the balls from dropping in the water.
- From the top of the bucket. Compressed sunflower seeds are cut into medium pieces, then fresh or dried dill and rye bread are added to them. Mix thoroughly and add mass to cheesecloth.
- Fish bait. Before preparing the bait, fish are caught from the reservoir where arthropods are found. It is acceptable to use freshly bought fish. An incision is made along the ridge, the fish air bubble is squeezed out or pierced. The scales are slightly picked, but completely removed from the crucian carp. Small fish are used whole, and large are cut into pieces.

Useful Tips
Experienced crayfish recommend using some tips that will help when catching crayfish.
It is required to know such features:
- Cancer has a strong sense of smell, which is why baits are used, which especially exude a smell. The arthropod smell is particularly attractive to garlic. Many rakolovy rub a piece of brick with garlic, and then put it in a trap. After some time, the crayfish will surely fall for the garlic flavor that attracts them so. If the smell is not strong enough, especially with vegetable baits, it is recommended to flavor them with garlic juice.
- It is best to catch crayfish in the period from July to December, it is at this time that arthropods gain a large mass, and caviar form in females. Use bait of animal origin. Also rub bread with garlic, wrap in gauze, placed in a trap.
- The bait (with the exception of mollusks) is firmly fixed at the bottom of the raking. A nylon pocket is sewn into the bottom of the trap. Sometimes they use a large bait, securing it with an elastic band.
- Using fresh fish for bait, it is pre-cut lengthwise. This is required to attract arthropods by the smell of meat and blood of fish.
- It is recommended to go hunting for crayfish in places where ponds are located near poultry farms. Waste from meat production often gets into such reservoirs, due to which there can be a huge amount of crayfish in these places.
Crayfish catching is considered to be a very interesting and fascinating process, because in this case excitement awakens in rakolov and the desire to catch as many individuals as possible as a delicacy for further delicacies. If you know where and when crayfish are found, as well as what traps and baits to use for their capture, luck will not turn its back.
